Trace will eventually discover that it is possible to utilize the Rebirth Chambers in Sudra to create clones of himself. The prime Trace and his colleague Hammond discovered Sudra's incredible technology and used a Rebirth Chamber to completely heal them of injuries sustained from the lab explosion back on Earth. However, by the time he arrives, Sudra's technological civilization had collapsed, and its inhabitants no longer remember the purpose their technology holds, and now hold it with religious reverence. Sudra is described as a "gateway world" by Athetos, hinting at how it is downstream of A'ansur. Crossing the breach, they find the world of Sudra. Using this newfound knowledge, Trace and Hammond are able to discover the Breach, a barrier between universes. During this time, Trace has an epiphany of a greater understanding of physics. The beamlet in the experiment goes awry with the pressure valve and a huge explosion occurs, severely injuring Trace and rendering him blind, immobile, and wheelchair-bound. In the year 2005 in a New Mexico research facility, Trace and his colleague Elizabeth Hammond worked on an experiment based on Trace's revolutionary ideas in the field of physics. Nonetheless, he continued striving to validate his work. Trace was blacklisted by many of his colleagues. The prime Trace was a theoretical physicist whose revolutionary theories were regarded by other scientists as false and insignificant, thereby earning him the nickname "Athetos" ( see the Etymology section for more information). He was able to reach Sudra by discovering a way to pass through the Breach from Earth and acts as the game's primary antagonist, having used a pathogen to wipe out almost all of the Sudrans.īeing the prime Trace, Athetos' personality used to be much more similar to the kind, pacifist temperament of Trace the player character however, hundreds of years spent in Sudra caused Athetos' morality to shift to the point where he is willing to annihilate entire sentient species in order to secure technological benefits for humanity. There will be secrets you can only find in the breach as well as places in the overworld that can only be reached via a path going through the breach-and vice versa.Athetos is a human and the very first, or prime, version of the clone Trace. In Axiom Verge 2, you’ll have the ability to enter and exit the breach and discover how that world is connected to the overworld. After toying around with a few approaches, I decided that approaching the breach as an additional dimension could unleash a huge range of opportunities for non-linear exploration. At first I considered just having one piece of land elevated above the other. It took a while for the two worlds idea to gel. I first decided to include the breach in Axiom Verge 2 in some form around 2016. In Axiom Verge, someone named Athetos was able to traverse the breach and use a breach attractor to keep Sudra trapped. The breach, on the right, is a region of space, long thought to be unpassable, that at first kept the denizens of Sudra safe from the outside universe. So first things first, what is the breach? Well, if you’ve played Axiom Verge 1, you may recall a cutscene with this image: I’ve hinted about this in an early trailer, where the drone goes through some mysterious portal, but I’ve kept this secret for a while.
Behind the overworld map that I’ve been showing this entire time, there is another interconnected breach world in an alternate dimension. Here’s the big reveal: Axiom Verge 2 is two worlds in one.
I’ve talked a little in the past about some of the technical challenges of making Axiom Verge 2, particularly the earth-like sloping terrain and the intelligent enemies, but I’ve never revealed the biggest challenge and most distinctive feature of Axiom Verge 2…until now. So I decided to push myself and try something ambitious.
